The Short Answer
Best for You, Not Best Overall
There's no single best beach in Zanzibar, the right one depends on what you want: swimming, quiet, nightlife or watersports. The key is finding the best beach.
Ask ten people about the best beach in Zanzibar and you'll get ten different answers, because there isn't one "best" beach. The right choice depends entirely on the kind of holiday you're looking for.
Some travellers want to swim all day; others want peace and privacy. Some look for lively restaurants and beach bars; others dream of empty white sand and quiet mornings. The key isn't finding the best beach, it's finding the best beach for you, and one honest factor most lists skip: the tides.
The Tide Reality
Tides Change Everything
Safari-TZ does not start with a list of luxury lodges; we start with you: your budget, adventure level, style, privacy needs, and celebrations.
If there's one thing we always explain before guests choose where to stay, it's this: not every Zanzibar beach behaves the same way.
The east coast experiences dramatic tidal changes. At low tide, the ocean can retreat hundreds of metres, leaving shallow lagoons and sandbanks behind. For some travellers that's fascinating; for others, especially those expecting to swim all day, it comes as a surprise. By contrast, the northern beaches remain swimmable through most of the tidal cycle. Neither is better, they're simply different, and understanding the tides helps you choose the right part of the island.
Nungwi (North)
Swimmable and Lively
Nungwi suits the widest range of travellers: excellent swimming with little tidal impact, sunsets, plenty of restaurants and bars.
If someone asks for one beach that suits the widest range of travellers, Nungwi is usually where we start. It offers:
- Excellent swimming with relatively little tidal impact
- Beautiful sunsets
- A wide choice of restaurants and beach bars
- Boat trips and lively evenings
It's especially popular with first-time visitors, honeymooners who like a little atmosphere, couples, families, and travellers combining safari and beach. The only real downside: it's one of Zanzibar's busiest beach areas, so if complete solitude is your priority, there are quieter parts of the island.
Kendwa (North)
The Best of Both
Just south of Nungwi, Kendwa balances wide beaches, excellent swimming, and sunsets. It is a bit quieter, but famous for full-moon parties.
Just south of Nungwi lies Kendwa, which many describe as the best balance between relaxation and activity. Like Nungwi, it's known for excellent swimming, beautiful sunsets and wide sandy beaches, but it generally feels a little quieter while still offering plenty of restaurants and accommodation.
Kendwa is also famous for its occasional full-moon beach parties, though outside those events it stays peaceful. It's an excellent choice for couples who want a romantic beach with a little life nearby.
Paje & Jambiani (SE)
Kitesurfing and Calm
Paje and Jambiani on the southeast coast are relaxed and popular with kitesurfers and backpackers, though the tides here are much more noticeable.
On the southeast coast, Paje and Jambiani offer a very different atmosphere, especially popular with kitesurfers, independent travellers, digital nomads and backpackers. The pace is relaxed, beach cafes replace larger resorts, and the feel is youthful and informal.
The honest catch: the tides are much more noticeable here. At low tide, long walks across the exposed reef are common before reaching deeper water. Some travellers love this; others expecting constant swimming may prefer the north.
The Quiet East Coast
Beautiful, but Tide-Dependent
For peace and privacy, the east coast (Matemwe, Pongwe) offers quiet beaches, boutique hotels and palm-lined coast, among the most beautiful on Zanzibar.
If your priority is peace and privacy, the east coast deserves serious consideration. Areas such as Matemwe and Pongwe offer quieter beaches, boutique hotels, beautiful palm-lined coastline and a slower pace. Many honeymooners choose these areas precisely because they feel secluded.
12The trade-off is the tide. These beaches are among the most beautiful on Zanzibar, but also among the most tide-dependent. As long as you understand that before booking, many guests absolutely love them.
Start in Stone Town
Culture Before the Coast
Stone Town isn't a beach but the cultural heart of Zanzibar. We almost always suggest a first night here, historic streets, rooftop restaurants and markets.
Stone Town isn't a beach destination, it's the cultural heart of Zanzibar, and we almost always recommend spending your first night here before heading to the coast. It's the perfect place to wander historic streets, visit local cafes, enjoy rooftop restaurants, explore markets and learn about Zanzibar's history.
After that, moving to the beach feels like the natural second chapter of the holiday. Our Things to Do in Stone Town guide explores the city in much more detail.
Which Beach Suits You
If You Want X, Go to Y
Quick match: swimming - Nungwi/Kendwa; honeymoon - east coast; nightlife -Nungwi; watersports - Paje; families - Kendwa; total peace -east coast.
Here's how we usually guide our guests:
- If swimming is your priority, Nungwi or Kendwa.
- If you're planning a honeymoon, quieter east-coast beaches and boutique resorts, or Kendwa for a balance of romance and convenience.
- If you enjoy nightlife and restaurants, Nungwi.
- If you love watersports, Paje or Jambiani, among the world's best for kitesurfing.
- If you're travelling with children, Nungwi or Kendwa, the easier swimming makes family beach days simpler.
- If you want complete peace, Matemwe, Pongwe or other quieter east-coast beaches.
How We Help + Talk
Never the Same Beach for All
Safari-TZ never recommends the same beach. We learn how you want to spend days, match the area, and usually pair a Stone Town night with beach stays.
We never recommend the same beach to every guest. Instead, we'll ask: Do you want to swim every day? Are you celebrating a honeymoon? Would you prefer quiet or lively? Are you interested in diving or kitesurfing? Is this your first visit to Zanzibar?
Based on your answers, we'll recommend the part of the island that genuinely matches your expectations. We also encourage most guests to combine one night in Stone Town with several nights on the beach, creating a holiday with both culture and relaxation.
A real example: a couple from Denmark originally planned to stay on the east coast because they'd seen beautiful photographs online. During planning, they mentioned that swimming every day was one of their highest priorities after their safari. We explained how the tides affect different parts of the island and suggested Kendwa instead. Back home, they said they were delighted with the recommendation, and that knowing about the tides beforehand helped them choose a beach that perfectly matched the holiday they wanted.
