The Short Answer
Fly Into JRO
For a Tanzania Northern Circuit safari, fly into Kilimanjaro (JRO), not Arusha Airport (ARK) or Dar. JRO is the gateway most safari guests want.
If you're coming for a Northern Circuit safari, the answer is simple: fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). That's the airport most international safari visitors want.
The confusion comes because northern Tanzania has three airports you'll see when searching flights:
- JRO, Kilimanjaro International Airport
- ARK, Arusha Airport
- DAR, Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam)
They serve different purposes, and knowing the difference makes planning much easier.
Why JRO Is the Gateway
Right in the Middle
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) sits between Arusha and Moshi, an easy transfer to the lodges where most safaris begin, and the gateway to the Northern.
For almost every Northern Circuit safari, JRO is the correct arrival airport. It's conveniently located between Arusha and Moshi, an easy transfer to the hotels and lodges where most safaris begin.
Whether you're visiting the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire or Lake Manyara, JRO is usually the most convenient international gateway. For the vast majority of our guests, this is the airport we recommend booking.
What About Nairobi?
Sometimes, With a Trade-Off
Nairobi (NBO) works if fares are better or you combine Kenya and Tanzania, but crossing the border adds immigration hassle and extra travel time.
Some travellers arrive through Nairobi (NBO). That can make sense if flight schedules are significantly better, fares are more attractive, or you're combining Kenya and Tanzania.
From Nairobi, you generally continue by a scheduled shuttle to Arusha or a regional flight to JRO or Arusha. The trade-off is that you're crossing an international border, which means extra immigration procedures and added travel time. If your holiday is entirely in Tanzania, flying directly into JRO is usually simpler and more relaxed.
How You Get to JRO
Connect Through a Hub
Most travelers from the US, UK, and Europe reach JRO via hubs like Amsterdam, Doha, or Addis. Pick sensible connection times over staying on one airline.
There are many possible routes, but most guests from the US, UK and Europe connect through a major hub before continuing to JRO. Common connection cities include:
- Amsterdam
- Doha
- Addis Ababa
- Istanbul
- Nairobi
The best route depends on where you're starting, your airline preference and your dates. Rather than fixating on one airline, choose the itinerary with sensible connection times that arrives in northern Tanzania comfortably before your safari begins.
What Is Arusha Airport?
ARK Is for Getting Around
Arusha Airport (ARK) is not the main international airport, it handles domestic, charter and light-aircraft flights to Serengeti, southern parks and Zanzibar.
This is one of the most common misunderstandings. Arusha Airport (ARK) is not the main international airport. It's primarily used for domestic flights, charters and light-aircraft services. Many flights to the Serengeti, northern airstrips, southern Tanzania and Zanzibar depart from ARK rather than JRO.
Think of it this way: JRO gets you to northern Tanzania; ARK gets you around northern Tanzania. Unless your itinerary specifically says to fly from ARK, your international ticket should almost certainly be booked to JRO.
When Should You Arrive?
Build in a Buffer
Arrive a day before your safari begins to recover from the flight, adjust to the time difference, rest, and protect against potential airline delays.
Our recommendation is simple: arrive one day before your safari begins. It gives you time to:
- Recover from a long international flight
- Adjust to the time difference
- Relax before several early safari mornings
- Protect against unexpected airline delays
Starting a safari straight off a long-haul flight is possible, but it's rarely the most enjoyable way to begin. Most of our itineraries include a night in Arusha before the first game drive.
Airport Transfers
Someone Waiting for You
The transfer from JRO to Arusha or nearby lodges takes around an hour. Safari-TZ arranges transfers so you don't negotiate taxis after a long flight.
Once you land at JRO, reaching Arusha or nearby lodges is straightforward, the transfer generally takes around an hour, depending on traffic and exactly where you're staying.
We arrange airport transfers for our guests, so there's no negotiating taxis or sorting transport after a long flight. Having someone waiting for you on arrival makes the first day far less stressful, especially on a first visit to Tanzania.
Visas and Arrival
Sort This Before You Fly
Most visitors need an e-Visa or visa on arrival, and some need a yellow-fever certificate. Entry rules change; check the latest before travel.
Most visitors need entry permission before or on arrival. Depending on your nationality, that may mean applying for an e-Visa before travelling, or obtaining a visa on arrival. Some travellers may also need a yellow-fever vaccination certificate if arriving from, or transiting through, countries where yellow fever is a transmission risk.
Entry requirements can change, so always check the latest official guidance before travelling. We cover visas, entry requirements and health documentation in detail in our Tanzania entry-documents guide.
What We Recommend + Talk
Seamless From Landing
Safari-TZ advises booking into JRO, arriving early, and departing a day late. We arrange meet-and-greets, transfers, and needed internal flights.
For almost every Northern Circuit safari, we advise guests to:
- Book international flights into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
- Arrive one day before the safari begins
- Depart the day after the safari ends, if possible
We'll arrange airport meet-and-greet, transfers between JRO and your accommodation, domestic flights if your itinerary includes fly-in segments, and internal flight coordination where required. Our aim is to make the journey as seamless as the safari itself.
A real example: a couple from the UK first planned to land at JRO just two hours before their safari was due to start. During planning, we suggested arriving the previous afternoon instead. Their international flight was eventually delayed by several hours, but because they'd built in a buffer night, they still started rested and on schedule the next morning. They said the extra night removed a lot of unnecessary stress from the start of the holiday.
