Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro

Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro

The Short Answer

The Drier Seasons, Broadly

Drier seasons offer reliable conditions and great views. But no time guarantees perfect weather, and Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round.

Generally speaking, the drier seasons are the most popular times to climb Kilimanjaro because they often offer more reliable trekking conditions and better mountain views. However, there's no perfect time that guarantees ideal weather.

Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, and every season has its own advantages and compromises. The best time for you depends on your travel dates, your tolerance for changing weather, and whether you're combining the climb with a safari or Zanzibar holiday.

The Two Dry Seasons

The Popular Windows

Most climbers choose Tanzania's dry seasons: June to October and late December to early March. Both of these periods are highly popular and busy.

Most climbers choose to climb during Tanzania's two drier periods.

- The long dry season generally falls between June and October and is the busiest time on the mountain. Many climbers choose these months because conditions are often clearer and trails are typically drier.

- The shorter dry season usually falls between late December and early March. This is another popular period, with many climbers enjoying good trekking conditions and clear summit views.

These are the times of year when Kilimanjaro sees the highest number of climbers, but popularity also means busier trails.

The Wetter Seasons

Quieter, Greener, Muddier

The wetter months offer quieter, greener trails with fewer people, but muddier paths and more clouds. It is still very possible with the right prep.

The wetter parts of the year offer a different Kilimanjaro experience. Trails are often greener and quieter, and there are generally fewer climbers on the mountain. At the same time, paths can become muddier, cloud cover may be more frequent, and clear summit views are less predictable.

That doesn't mean climbing isn't possible. With realistic expectations, suitable equipment and an experienced mountain team, many people still have memorable climbs during these periods. The key is understanding that you're choosing a different experience rather than a worse one.

No Guarantees

Mountain Weather Changes Fast

Mountain weather changes fast. Even dry months can bring rain, while wet seasons offer clear mornings. Prepare for a range, not a perfect forecast.

Mountain weather changes quickly. Even during the driest months, it's possible to experience rain, strong winds or cloud, and climbers in wetter seasons sometimes enjoy beautiful clear mornings and outstanding summit views. Weather on Kilimanjaro is influenced by altitude as much as by the time of year.

For that reason, we encourage climbers to prepare for a range of conditions rather than expecting any season to provide perfect weather every day. The best climbing season improves your chances of favourable conditions, it doesn't guarantee them. Our safety guide covers how weather is managed on the mountain.

The Full Moon

A Brighter Summit Night

Timing summit night with a full moon brings brighter trails and beautiful views. If your dates are flexible we can advise, but weather still rules.

Many climbers enjoy planning their summit night close to a full moon. A brighter night can provide beautiful views across the mountain and make the landscape feel more open during the final ascent. If your travel dates are flexible, we're happy to advise whether your climb could coincide with a full moon.

That said, weather conditions remain more important than the lunar calendar, cloud cover can still limit visibility regardless of the moon's phase.

Busy vs Quiet

Weather or Crowds

A key trade-off: weather vs crowds. Peak dry season has the most reliable conditions but busy trails, while quieter periods mean more weather risk.

One of the biggest trade-offs is deciding between weather and crowds. During the main dry seasons, conditions are often at their most reliable, but the mountain is also at its busiest, particularly on popular routes such as Machame and Marangu.

Travelling during quieter periods can offer a more peaceful experience and fewer people on the trails, but you'll need to accept a greater chance of rain or changing weather. Neither option is automatically better, some climbers enjoy the lively atmosphere of peak season, while others value quieter camps and less crowded paths. Our routes guide notes which routes get busiest.

Vs Safari Season

Aligned, but Not the Same

Climbing seasons align with safari seasons, but the reasons differ: safari timing follows wildlife, while Kilimanjaro depends on mountain weather.

The best times for climbing Kilimanjaro broadly align with Tanzania's most popular safari seasons. That's one reason so many travellers combine a climb with a safari in destinations such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater or Tarangire National Park.

It's worth remembering the reasons are different, though. Safari timing is largely influenced by wildlife movements and game-viewing conditions, while Kilimanjaro timing is based on mountain weather and trekking conditions. The seasons complement each other well, but they aren't determined by the same factors. Our safari best-time guide and Kilimanjaro-and-safari guide cover how the two fit together.

Route & Timing

To Some Extent

Routes approach from different sides and conditions vary. Rongai is a good shoulder-season option, but no route is immune to changing weather.

To some extent, yes. Different routes approach Kilimanjaro from different sides of the mountain, and local conditions can vary. For example, the Rongai Route approaches from the northern side and is often considered a good option when climbers are travelling during shoulder-season conditions.

Even so, no route is completely protected from changing mountain weather. When recommending a route, we consider both the season and the overall experience you're looking for.

How We Help + Talk

The Right Time for You

We don't just suggest peak months. We consider your dates, routes, and safari plans, offering honest advice even if your window is a wetter one.

We don't simply recommend the most popular month. Instead, we look at your available travel dates, whether you're combining Kilimanjaro with a safari or Zanzibar, your preferred route, whether you enjoy lively trails or quieter mountain experiences, and how flexible your travel plans are.

If your holiday falls during a wetter period, we'll explain honestly what conditions are likely to be like rather than encouraging unrealistic expectations. And if you're travelling during peak season, we'll help you choose a route and itinerary that best matches the experience you're hoping to have. Our goal is to help you choose the right time for you, not simply the busiest time of year.

A real example: a climber contacted us hoping to avoid busy trails but was concerned about travelling outside the main climbing season. We explained the likely trade-offs, including the possibility of wetter conditions alongside a quieter mountain experience. After preparing with the right equipment and realistic expectations, they completed their climb and later said the peaceful atmosphere and fewer crowds were among the highlights of the trip. It's a good reminder that the "best" time to climb isn't the same for everyone, it's the time that best matches your expectations, priorities and sense of adventure.
