Is Zanzibar Worth Visiting?

Is Zanzibar Worth Visiting?

The Short Answer

For Most People, Yes

Should you add Zanzibar to your safari? For most, yes, not because it's a perfect paradise, but because it offers a total contrast that complements the bush.

If you're already planning a Tanzania safari, you'll almost certainly ask one question: "Should I add Zanzibar?" Our honest answer is, for most travellers, yes. But not because it's a perfect tropical paradise, it's because Zanzibar offers something completely different from a safari, making the two experiences complement each other beautifully.

That said, it's not the right destination for everyone, and it's better to know that before you book than after you arrive. This guide gives you the honest picture.

What It's Really Like

More Than a Beach

Many see Zanzibar as just a beach destination, but it's much more. Discover Swahili culture, spice farms, Stone Town, and stunning Indian Ocean beaches.

Many people imagine Zanzibar as simply another beach destination. It's much more than that. Zanzibar combines centuries of Swahili culture, fascinating history, Indian Ocean beaches, spice farms, traditional fishing villages, colourful markets and world-famous Stone Town.

You can spend one day exploring narrow historic streets and the next relaxing on white-sand beaches with turquoise water. That blend of culture and coastline is what makes Zanzibar feel different from many other tropical islands.

Who Will Love It

Best for Mixing Experiences

Zanzibar suits those mixing experiences: safari travellers unwinding, honeymooners, families, divers, snorkellers, and culture lovers.

Zanzibar is an excellent choice if you enjoy combining different travel experiences. It works especially well for:

- Safari travellers, slowing the pace beside the ocean after early mornings and game drives

- Honeymooners, safari then beach is one of Africa's classic honeymoon combinations

- Families, children often enjoy balancing wildlife with swimming, beaches and boat trips

- Divers and snorkellers, the Indian Ocean offers beautiful reefs and warm water much of the year

- Culture lovers, Stone Town alone is worth visiting for its history, architecture and local life

Who Might Not

The Honest Downsides

Being honest means the downsides too: east-coast tides go far out, seaweed washes up, beach sellers exist, and it's a real working island, not a resort.

Being honest also means talking about the downsides, Zanzibar isn't a flawless postcard. Some visitors are surprised by:

- The tides, along much of the east coast the tide goes out a very long way, at low tide you may walk hundreds of metres before reaching water deep enough to swim. Some love watching this changing landscape; others expecting all-day swimming are disappointed.

- Seaweed seasons, depending on the time of year, seaweed naturally washes onto some beaches, part of the ecosystem rather than pollution.

- Beach sellers, on some beaches, vendors offer tours, souvenirs or activities, mostly friendly, but worth knowing if you expect complete seclusion.

- Not every beach is a luxury resort, this is a real island where communities live and work, with fishing boats and villages part of the experience.

The Tide Reality

Coast Matters More Than Hotel

If there's one thing to understand before booking: beaches vary. The east coast has big tidal changes; the north stays swimmable all day long.

If there's one thing we encourage every guest to understand before booking, it's this: not every Zanzibar beach behaves the same way. The east coast experiences significant tidal changes, while the north coast remains much more consistently swimmable throughout the day.

Neither is better, they're simply different, and choosing the right area matters far more than choosing the "best" hotel. Our Zanzibar tides guide explains exactly which beaches suit which expectations, and our best-beaches guide covers each area.

Great After a Safari

The Perfect Contrast

A safari is exciting but intense: early mornings and dusty roads. Zanzibar offers the perfect contrast—slow down, unpack, and watch the ocean sunsets.

A Tanzania safari is exciting. It also involves early mornings, game drives, long wildlife days, dusty roads and constant activity. Zanzibar provides the perfect contrast, instead of watching wildlife, you slow down; instead of moving every day, you unpack; instead of sunrise game drives, you enjoy sunsets over the Indian Ocean.

That's why many travellers feel the beach isn't an extra, it completes the safari. Our honeymoon itinerary and safari-vs-beach guides show how the two halves fit together.

How Long to Stay

Don't Add Just One Night

Give Zanzibar enough time to enjoy. Three nights is a comfortable minimum; many prefer four or five. We don't recommend adding just one night.

We generally recommend giving Zanzibar enough time to enjoy it properly. Three nights is often a comfortable minimum, and many guests prefer four or five, especially after a longer safari.

What we don't usually recommend is adding just a single night. By the time you've travelled from the mainland and settled into your hotel, it's almost time to leave again, a little extra time makes a big difference.

Common Myths

Clearing a Few Up

A few myths to clear: Zanzibar isn't only for honeymoons or luxury, it isn't a party island, and Stone Town is its cultural heart, not the beach.

A few myths deserve clearing up:

- "Zanzibar is only for honeymooners." Not at all, families, solo travellers and groups enjoy it every year.

- "It's only for luxury travellers." There's accommodation for a wide range of budgets; you don't need a luxury resort.

- "It's a party destination." Some beach areas have lively bars and restaurants, but most of Zanzibar is relaxed rather than nightlife-focused.

- "Stone Town has the best beaches." Stone Town is the island's cultural heart, not its beach destination, most visitors spend one night there before moving to a coastal area.

How We Help + Talk

Not Just Selling More Nights

We don't recommend Zanzibar to everyone. We ask what you enjoy—beaches, culture, relaxing—to ensure it's the right trip, or suggest alternatives.

We don't automatically recommend Zanzibar to everyone. Instead, we'll ask questions like: Do you enjoy beaches? Would you rather spend extra time on safari? Do you like history and culture? Are you hoping to relax after your wildlife adventure?

Sometimes Zanzibar is exactly the right ending; occasionally we'll suggest spending those extra days elsewhere if it better matches your interests. Our goal isn't to sell you more nights, it's to help you build the trip that's right for you.

A real example: a couple from Australia weren't sure whether to add Zanzibar after their safari because they weren't "beach holiday people." We suggested one night in historic Stone Town followed by three nights on the quieter north coast. They later said the combination gave them exactly the balance they wanted, culture, relaxation and time to reflect on their safari before flying home.
