The Short Answer
Driver for Most Visitors
For most visitors, a hired car with a driver beats local transport in Tanzania for comfort and safety. Public transport is cheap but better for confident travel
First, a clarification: the safari itself is always a guided 4x4 with a driver-guide. This page is about getting around everywhere else, between towns, to the airport, around Arusha or Zanzibar.
For most visitors, a hired car with a driver is the easiest and safest option for that. Public transport, dala-dala minibuses, intercity buses, bodaboda motorbike taxis, is cheap and authentic, but it suits confident, flexible travellers more than first-timers on a tight schedule. Taxis and ride-hailing fill the gap for short hops. The rest of this page is the honest pros and cons of each.
The Options
What's Actually Available
Tanzania's transport options for visitors: dala-dala minibuses, intercity buses, taxis and ride-hailing, bodaboda motorbike taxis, and hired car with a driver.
- Dala-dala (minibuses) — the local workhorse, very cheap, crowded, no fixed timetable. Great for budget travellers and a real local experience; not ideal with luggage or a schedule.
- Intercity buses — the main way Tanzanians travel long distances. Some reputable lines are comfortable; quality and safety vary a lot by operator.
- Taxis and ride-hailing — fine for short trips in cities. Use hotel-arranged taxis or a reputable app; agree fares before you set off with street taxis.
- Bodaboda (motorbike taxis) — fast through traffic, but the riskiest option. We'd steer most visitors away from these, especially without a helmet.
- Hired car with driver — a vehicle and a local driver for the day or the trip. The most comfortable, flexible and low-stress option for visitors, and our usual recommendation.
Driver vs the Rest
The Honest Trade-Offs
Hired driver vs public transport vs self-drive in Tanzania: the driver wins on comfort and local knowledge, public transport on price.
- Hired car with driver — costs more than public transport, far less than you'd fear, and removes the navigation, parking, language and safety friction. The driver knows the roads, the shortcuts and the safe stops. Best all-round for visitors.
- Public transport — unbeatable on price and atmosphere, but slower, less predictable, tougher with luggage, and the safety standard varies by operator. Better for experienced, flexible travellers.
- Self-drive (non-safari) — possible, but you take on unfamiliar roads, local driving styles and parking. For the safari itself it's rarely the right call (see the guided vs self-drive guide); even off-safari, most visitors prefer a driver.
What Tourists Get Wrong
Where People Slip Up
Common transport mistakes in Tanzania: not agreeing taxi fares upfront, underestimating drive times, taking bodabodas, and using unlicensed airport taxis.
- Not agreeing the fare first — always confirm a street-taxi price before you start; use hotel-arranged or app taxis where you can.
- Underestimating drive times — distances look short on a map and take far longer on real roads. Build in buffer.
- Hopping on bodabodas — tempting and quick, but the highest-risk way to travel. We advise against it.
- Unlicensed airport taxis — use a pre-arranged transfer or an official rank, not the first person who approaches you.
