Zanzibar: Resort Beach vs Public Beach

Zanzibar: Resort Beach vs Public Beach

The Short Answer

The Beaches Are Public

A big Zanzibar misconception: that resorts have private beaches. Almost all are public. What changes is the experience, comfort and service you get.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Zanzibar is that resorts have their own private beaches. The honest truth is that almost all of Zanzibar's beaches are public.

What changes isn't who owns the sand, it's the experience. A beachfront resort gives you comfort, convenience and service, while the beach itself remains open for everyone to enjoy. Understanding that before you book helps set realistic expectations and avoids disappointment.

What "Resort Beach" Means

You Pay for Experience

A resort beach means the sand in front of your hotel. Resorts provide loungers, shade, and service, but cannot block the ocean. You pay for the experience.

When people talk about a "private resort beach," they usually mean the stretch of sand directly in front of their hotel. The resort typically provides sun loungers, umbrellas or shaded areas, food and drink service, beach towels, staff presence, and regular cleaning of the beachfront. These features create a much more comfortable beach experience.

What the resort cannot do is fence off the ocean or stop people from walking along the shoreline. The beach remains public, even if it feels much quieter immediately in front of your hotel. In other words, you're paying for the experience, not ownership of the beach.

A Public Beach

Authentic Island Life

Public beaches offer authentic island life with local families, fishermen, and vendors. You'll trade resort comfort for a vibrant, lively local atmosphere.

Public beaches offer a very different atmosphere. They're often where you'll see local families enjoying the beach, fishermen launching or returning with their boats, children playing football, beach cafes, market stalls and local vendors. Many travellers love this side of Zanzibar because it feels authentic and full of everyday island life.

The trade-off is that public beaches usually have fewer facilities, less shade, no dedicated loungers, fewer toilets or changing facilities, and more interaction with vendors. Neither option is better, it simply depends on the experience you're looking for.

How Private Is It?

Peaceful, Not Private

Resort beachfronts are peaceful but not private. Because the shoreline is public, locals, fishermen, walkers, and vendors can still walk past your sunbeds.

The honest answer is: more peaceful, but not private. You'll usually find the beachfront immediately outside a resort is quieter than busy public areas. However, because the shoreline is public, it's perfectly normal for local people, fishermen, walkers and beach vendors to pass along the beach.

This surprises some visitors expecting complete seclusion. Most quickly realise it's simply part of being on a real island rather than a private resort island. If absolute privacy is your priority, it's important to set realistic expectations before you travel.

Beach Sellers

More Managed at Resorts

Beach vendors are part of island life. Around resorts, interactions are managed; on public beaches you will see more. A polite "no thank you" always works.

Beach vendors are part of life on many Zanzibar beaches, and the experience varies depending on where you stay. Around resort areas, interactions are often more relaxed, with staff presence helping create a calmer atmosphere. On more open public beaches, you'll usually encounter more people offering souvenirs, boat trips, activities and handicrafts.

Most are friendly and respectful, and a polite smile and a simple "no thank you" is usually all that's needed. Our Zanzibar beach rules and etiquette guide explains this in more detail.

Comfort & Facilities

Where Resorts Earn Their Value

Resorts make the biggest difference: loungers, pools, beach bars, and clean bathrooms. On a public beach, you must bring your own beach comfort and drinks.

This is where resorts make the biggest difference. At a beachfront resort, you'll often enjoy comfortable loungers, shaded seating, beach bars, restaurant service, swimming pools, clean bathrooms, organised water sports and staff available throughout the day.

On a public beach, you'll generally rely on nearby cafes or bring what you need yourself. If comfort and convenience matter to you, this is often where a resort justifies its value.

The Tide Affects All

Geography, Not the Hotel

A resort cannot change the tide. Whether five-star or public, the ocean behaves the same: the east coast still reveals sand flats. It's geography.

One important point is often misunderstood: a luxury resort cannot change the tide. Whether you're staying at a five-star hotel or visiting a public beach, the ocean behaves exactly the same. If you're on the east coast, low tide will still reveal wide sand flats; if you're on the north coast, swimming will remain much more consistent through the day.

The difference comes from geography, not from the hotel. Many resorts help by providing beautiful swimming pools, but no accommodation can make the sea ignore the tide. Our guide to understanding Zanzibar's tides explains how this affects different parts of the island.

Which Is Right?

Comfort vs Independence

Choose a resort beachfront for comfort, convenience, and families. Public beaches suit independent, culture-loving, and photography-minded travellers.

Choose a resort beachfront if you value comfort, convenience, families with young children, honeymoon relaxation, food and drink close by, and spending full days at the beach.

Public beaches may suit you if you enjoy independent travel, local culture, photography, walking through local communities, and relaxed exploration without resort facilities.

Many visitors actually enjoy both, spending most of their holiday relaxing at their hotel while also exploring public beaches, villages and local cafes during the day.

How We Help + Talk

We Won't Oversell "Private"

We do not oversell "private beaches." We explain what resorts provide (comfort, service, and facilities) and what they do not: exclusive sand or the ocean.

We're careful not to oversell the idea of "private beaches." Instead, we'll explain exactly what you're paying for. A beachfront resort gives you comfort, service, facilities and convenience. It doesn't provide a private ocean, exclusive ownership of the beach, or freedom from tides.

By setting honest expectations, we help guests choose accommodation they'll genuinely enjoy rather than simply choosing the most expensive hotel.

A real example: a couple planning their honeymoon initially assumed a beachfront resort would guarantee a completely private beach. During planning, we explained that Zanzibar's beaches are public and that the real value of a resort lies in its comfort, service and atmosphere rather than exclusive access to the sand. They later said they appreciated knowing this beforehand, because it matched exactly what they experienced after arriving.
