The Short Answer
Comfortable, Not a Resort
What are safari lodges actually like? Amenities vary by location, style and tier. A lodge isn't a five-star beach resort, it's a comfortable place to relax.
One of the biggest questions first-time safari travellers ask is: "What are the lodges actually like?" The honest answer is that amenities vary considerably depending on the lodge's location, style and budget tier.
A safari lodge isn't designed to compete with a five-star beach resort or a city hotel. It's designed to give you a comfortable place to relax between unforgettable days in the bush. Most travellers are pleasantly surprised by just how comfortable safari lodges are, but it helps to arrive with realistic expectations.
The Rooms
Private and En-Suite
At virtually every quality lodge you'll have your own en-suite room, comfortable bed, hot shower, storage, often a private veranda with a view.
At virtually every quality safari lodge, you'll have your own private room. A typical room includes:
- A comfortable bed and en-suite bathroom
- Flushing toilet and hot shower
- Wardrobe or luggage space and a seating area
- A mosquito net where appropriate
Many lodges also feature a private veranda or balcony, outdoor seating, and views over the surrounding landscape. As you move into higher tiers, rooms become larger and often include premium furnishings, larger bathrooms and more private outdoor space, but the basics stay remarkably consistent.
Food & Dining
Usually Full Board
The food often pleasantly surprises guests: freshly prepared meals, international and local dishes, vegetarian options, buffet or plated.
One pleasant surprise for many guests is the quality of the food. Most lodges offer freshly prepared meals, international dishes, local Tanzanian specialities and vegetarian options. Depending on the lodge, meals may be buffet style, plated table service, or a combination.
On a typical safari, accommodation is usually offered on a full-board basis, meaning breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. Drinks are handled differently depending on the lodge and tier. Our safari meal plans guide explains exactly what's included.
Pools & Common Areas
A Lodge Advantage
Communal facilities are where lodges often edge out camps: many have a pool, lounges, a bar, terraces, fireplaces and viewing decks, perfect for relaxing.
One area where safari lodges often have an advantage over tented camps is their communal facilities. Many lodges include swimming pools, comfortable lounges, bars, outdoor terraces, fireplaces, viewing decks and gardens.
After a long game drive, many guests enjoy relaxing by the pool before dinner or watching the sunset from the lodge terrace. These shared spaces often become part of the safari experience themselves.
Power, Water & A/C
More Reliable, Still Bush
Lodges offer consistent utilities than remote camps, reliable power, hot water, charging points, but many are still remote. A/C isn't standard, fans are common.
Safari lodges generally offer more consistent utilities than remote tented camps, most provide reliable electricity, hot running water, charging points in rooms and good lighting. But many lodges still operate in remote wilderness areas, and some rely on solar power, generators or hybrid systems, which sometimes means electricity during scheduled hours rather than continuously.
Air conditioning is not standard across all lodges. In cooler areas such as the Ngorongoro Highlands it's often unnecessary; in warmer regions, some lodges offer ceiling or portable fans, or A/C in selected room categories. If A/C matters to you, mention it before booking rather than assuming every lodge has it.
Wi-Fi & Connectivity
Realistic Expectations
Many lodges now offer Wi-Fi, but keep expectations realistic: it may be lodge-wide or only in common areas, slower than home, with occasional interruptions.
Many safari lodges now offer Wi-Fi, but expectations should remain realistic, internet in the bush is rarely comparable to city hotels. Typical situations include Wi-Fi throughout the lodge, Wi-Fi only in reception or lounge areas, slower speeds than at home, and occasional interruptions due to weather or remoteness.
Many guests discover they actually enjoy being a little less connected for a few days. If staying online matters, let your planner know so suitable lodges can be recommended. Our connectivity-on-safari guide covers this in more detail.
Spa & Wellness
Lovely, But Not Standard
Some higher-end lodges offer massages, spa rooms, yoga decks or wellness areas, wonderful if available, but not standard. They're generally found in luxury.
Some higher-end safari lodges offer additional wellness facilities such as massage treatments, spa rooms, yoga decks or wellness areas. These are wonderful additions if available, but they're certainly not standard, generally found in luxury and premium lodges rather than budget or mid-range accommodation. If a spa is important to your holiday, it's best to request it when planning your itinerary.
What They Don't Have
Built Around Nature
The easiest way to enjoy a lodge is knowing what it isn’t. Safari lodges are built around nature, not entertainment, so there’s little nightlife or shopping.
One of the easiest ways to enjoy your safari is understanding what a safari lodge is, and what it isn't. Safari lodges are built around nature, not designed as entertainment resorts. Most don't offer nightlife, shopping centres, organised evening entertainment, multiple restaurants or extensive sports facilities.
Instead, evenings are wonderfully simple, watching the sunset, enjoying dinner, talking about the day's sightings, listening to the sounds of the bush, and preparing for another early game drive. That's exactly what many guests come to Tanzania to experience.
How We Help + Talk
Priorities Over Star Ratings
We don't recommend lodges purely on star ratings. We ask what matters, pool, Wi-Fi, spa, honeymoon, being closer to wildlife, then match lodges to your priority
We don't recommend accommodation based purely on star ratings. Instead, we ask what's most important to you, for example: Do you want a swimming pool? Is reliable Wi-Fi essential? Are you celebrating a honeymoon? Is a spa important? Would you rather stay closer to wildlife than have extra facilities?
We'll then recommend lodges that genuinely match your priorities and budget, and explain honestly what each lodge offers so there are no surprises when you arrive.
A real example: a family from Germany told us they were worried safari lodges would feel basic, imagining something like mountain huts or remote cabins. We explained what to expect and recommended comfortable mid-range lodges with swimming pools for their children. After the trip, they said the accommodation exceeded their expectations and became a welcome place to relax between game drives. They also appreciated knowing in advance that the lodges weren't beach resorts, which helped them enjoy the quieter safari atmosphere for what it was.
