The Short Answer
The Gateway, Not the Resort
Almost every Northern Circuit safari begins in Arusha. For solo travelers, it's an easy, well-set-up spot to spend a night—a busy hub, not a beach resort.
For almost every Northern Circuit safari, your journey begins in Arusha. If you're travelling solo, it's natural to wonder what your first day in Tanzania will be like.
The good news: thousands of safari travellers pass through Arusha every year, it's well set up for visitors and an easy place to spend a night before your adventure begins. The key is understanding what Arusha is, and what it isn't, which is where this guide starts.
Why You Pass Through
A Working Town, Not a Resort
Arusha is Tanzania's safari capital; most Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire trips begin here. It's a busy working gateway, not a beach resort.
Arusha is often called the safari capital of northern Tanzania. Most safaris to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara begin here.
For most visitors, Arusha isn't the destination itself, it's the gateway. Think of it as a busy working town where travellers gather before heading into the parks. If you're expecting a beach resort, you'll be disappointed; if you're expecting a lively, practical safari hub, you'll find exactly that.
Arriving on Your Own
Arrange the Pickup First
Most travelers arrive at JRO, a comfortable drive to Arusha. Travelling solo, arrange your transfer in advance and spend your first night here.
Most international safari travellers arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), from there it's a comfortable drive to Arusha. Travelling solo, we strongly recommend arranging your airport transfer before you arrive, knowing someone is waiting removes a lot of stress after a long flight.
We also recommend spending your first night in Arusha rather than starting your safari immediately. That extra night lets you recover from jet lag, absorb any flight delays, meet your guide, and begin rested rather than rushed, one of the simplest decisions that improves the whole trip. Our flights-to-Arusha guide covers the arrival in more depth
Where to Stay Solo
Convenience vs Calm
No single area is best in Arusha: Central works for cafes and shops, while quieter outskirts suit a peaceful first night—our top pick for first-time solos.
There isn't one "best" area, it depends on what you want.
- Central Arusha works well if you'd like cafes, restaurants, shops and easy access to town, convenient if you want to explore independently before your safari.
- The outskirts, many lodges sit in quieter, greener surroundings just outside the city, ideal for a peaceful first night, gardens and a slower pace before the safari begins. For many first-time solo travellers, this is our preferred option, you're still collected easily while enjoying a calmer atmosphere.
Getting Around
Plan How You Travel
Arusha is easy to explore, but plan ahead: use licensed taxis or ride-hailing apps. Day walks are fine, but use organized transport after dark.
Arusha is straightforward to explore, but like any busy town it's worth planning how you move around. For most visitors we recommend:
- Licensed taxis
- Pre-arranged transfers
- Reputable ride-hailing services where available
Short walks around busy areas during the day are generally enjoyable. For longer journeys or after dark, organised transport is the better choice, simple, convenient and hassle-free.
A Spare Day, Solo
No Expensive Excursion Needed
Arrive early or stay late? No expensive excursion needed. Solo travelers enjoy cafes, markets, coffee shopping, craft centers, and local life.
If you arrive a day early, or stay after your safari, you don't need an expensive excursion to enjoy yourself. Many solo travellers spend the day:
- Visiting local cafes and browsing markets
- Shopping for Tanzanian coffee
- Exploring local craft centres
- Enjoying a relaxed lunch
- Simply watching daily life unfold

Safety & Eating Alone
City Common Sense
Arusha is safe for solo visitors using city common sense: keep valuables hidden and use taxis after dark. Dining alone is completely normal here.
In our experience, Arusha is a comfortable place for solo visitors who use the same common sense they would in any unfamiliar city, keeping valuables out of sight, using licensed transport after dark, avoiding isolated streets at night, and staying aware of surroundings. Most visitors experience no problems. For much more detail, see our guides on whether Tanzania is safe for tourists and solo female travel in Tanzania.
On eating alone: many solo travellers worry it'll feel awkward, in Arusha it usually isn't. Lodges, cafes and restaurants regularly welcome independent travellers. Reading a book, chatting with staff, or planning the next day's safari over dinner is perfectly normal, and you'll probably see other safari travellers doing the same.
Meeting Travellers
It Starts Before You Leave
Arusha offers chances to meet people at lodges, briefings, or dinner. On a join-in group trip, you may even meet your travel partners before departure.
If you'd like to meet people before your safari, Arusha offers plenty of opportunities. Many guests meet fellow travellers at safari lodges, during pre-safari briefings, over dinner, and in hotel gardens and lounges.
If you're joining a scheduled safari, you may even meet some of your travel companions before departure, those first conversations often make the safari feel more relaxed once you're on the road together. Our guide on meeting people on a solo safari has more.
How We Help + Talk
Make the Arrival Easy
For solo guests, Safari-TZ keeps arrival easy: airport meet-and-greet, transfer, a chosen first-night lodge, briefing, and next-morning pickup.
For solo guests, our goal is simple: make your arrival feel easy. We'll arrange:
- Airport meet-and-greet and transfer to your accommodation
- A carefully chosen first-night lodge
- Your safari briefing
- Collection the following morning
If you're joining a scheduled group, we'll explain how everything works before you set off, so you arrive in Tanzania knowing exactly what to expect.
A real example: a solo traveller from New Zealand arrived at JRO after a long overnight journey and spent their first evening at a quiet lodge on the outskirts of Arusha. The next afternoon they explored a nearby cafe and craft market, then met several other travellers during the safari briefing. By the next morning they already recognised familiar faces as they set off for Tarangire. They later said spending one relaxed night in Arusha helped them settle into Tanzania far more comfortably than trying to start the safari straight after landing.
