Many first-time visitors wonder: "Do I need to rent a car or drive myself around Tanzania?" The honest answer is no. In fact, most international visitors never drive at all.

A classic Tanzania safari is designed so that your driver-guide handles all the driving, navigation and logistics while you simply enjoy the journey. If you don't drive, or simply don't want to, you'll be in exactly the same position as the vast majority of safari travellers.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about visiting Tanzania. On a typical safari, you won't be expected to drive between parks or take the wheel during game drives. Instead, your professional driver-guide takes care of airport pickups, transfers between destinations, national park driving, game drives, navigation, park entry procedures and wildlife spotting.

There's a good reason for this. Safari driving isn't simply about operating a vehicle, it involves navigating unmarked park tracks, understanding wildlife behaviour, communicating with other guides, knowing current road conditions and handling unexpected situations safely. Your safari usually begins the moment you land. Most international travellers arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and from there your safari operator arranges a private transfer to your hotel or lodge in Arusha.

You don't need to hire a rental car, negotiate with taxis, navigate unfamiliar roads or worry about directions. Most Northern Circuit safaris are road safaris, meaning you travel comfortably between parks in a purpose-built 4x4 driven by your guide. These journeys become part of the experience, along the way you'll enjoy changing landscapes, local villages, Rift Valley viewpoints, wildlife sightings and conversations with your guide.

Some transfer days are longer than others, so it's worth choosing an itinerary that balances driving with enough time in each destination.

If you'd rather avoid long road journeys altogether, there's another option. Many itineraries can include domestic flights between parks, especially popular for the Serengeti, southern Tanzania and longer itineraries.

The main advantage is comfort, instead of spending much of the day on the road, you arrive quickly and maximise your wildlife time. The trade-off is cost: internal flights are more expensive than road travel, but many guests feel the convenience is well worth it. If you have a day before or after your safari, you'll probably spend it in Arusha, and you don't need a car here either. Most visitors use pre-arranged hotel transfers, licensed taxis or reputable ride-hailing services.

The same applies if you're adding Zanzibar to your trip. Most visitors rely on airport transfers, hotel transport, licensed taxis and organised excursions. Driving yourself on the island is unnecessary for almost all travellers, whether you're staying in Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa or Paje, it's easy to explore without hiring a car.
