The Short Answer
The Best One for You
Which is the best beach in Zanzibar? There isn't one; it depends on what you want (swimming, quiet, kitesurfing). Choosing the right area beats the hotel.
One of the most common questions we hear is: "Which is the best beach in Zanzibar?" The honest answer is there isn't one. The best beach depends entirely on what you want from your holiday.
Some travellers want to swim all day; others want complete peace and quiet. Some come for kitesurfing, while others want restaurants, sunsets or cultural experiences. Choosing the right part of Zanzibar matters far more than choosing the most expensive hotel, this guide helps you match an area to you.
What Decides It
Five Simple Questions
Before choosing where to stay, ask: Is swimming your priority? What atmosphere suits you? Which activities interest you? And what's your travel style?
Before choosing where to stay, ask yourself a few simple questions:
- Is swimming your priority? If hours in the sea matter, you'll want a coast where the tides have less impact.
- What atmosphere do you enjoy? Some beaches are lively and social, others peaceful and quiet, neither is better.
- What activities interest you? Kitesurfing, diving, snorkelling, beach walks or sunset dining, different areas are known for different things.
- How important is Stone Town? If you love history and Swahili culture, you'll probably want a night there before the beach.
- What's your travel style? Honeymoon, family, solo, first-timer, adventure or pure relaxation.
Nungwi & Kendwa
Lively and Swimmable
North coast: best for first-timers, swimming, families and couples wanting restaurants. Consistently swimmable, with lively bars, water sports and sunsets.
Best for first-time visitors, swimmers, sociable travellers, families, and couples wanting restaurants and nightlife. The north coast is famous because it's consistently swimmable throughout the tidal cycle. You'll also find plenty of restaurants, beach bars, water sports, sunset views and lively evenings. If you like lots of choice and activity, this area is hard to beat.
The trade-off: because it's so popular, the north is generally busier than quieter parts of the island. If you're looking for complete solitude, another area may suit you better.
Paje & Jambiani
Kitesurfing and Laid-Back
Southeast coast: best for kitesurfers, active travellers and laid-back holidays. Famous for kitesurfing with relaxed cafes, but swimming is tide-dependent.
Best for kitesurfers, active travellers, younger visitors, independent travellers and relaxed, laid-back holidays. Paje and Jambiani have become internationally known for kitesurfing thanks to their combination of wind and tidal conditions. They also have relaxed cafes, beach bars, boutique accommodation and a youthful atmosphere.
The trade-off: swimming depends much more on the tides than on the north coast. If uninterrupted swimming is your priority, another beach may suit you better.
Matemwe & Pongwe
Quiet and Romantic
East coast: best for honeymooners, quiet holidays and relaxation. A slower pace with peaceful sand and fewer crowds, but swimming is affected by tides.
Best for honeymooners, couples, quiet holidays, readers, and travellers wanting complete relaxation. These eastern beaches offer a slower pace, peaceful stretches of sand, boutique hotels, fewer crowds and beautiful sunrise views. For many travellers, this is exactly what they want after a busy safari.
The trade-off: like much of the east coast, swimming is affected by the tides. The beaches remain beautiful throughout the day, but the sea changes dramatically with the tide, our tides guide explains how.
Stone Town
A Cultural Base
Stone Town belongs on almost every itinerary, but it isn't a beach destination. It's Swahili culture, history and markets—ideal for a night or two.
Stone Town deserves its place on almost every Zanzibar itinerary, but it's important to understand one thing: Stone Town isn't a beach destination. Instead, it's where you'll discover Swahili culture, historic architecture, local markets, museums, cafes and waterfront sunsets.
Most visitors spend one or two nights here before continuing to one of Zanzibar's beach areas. It's an excellent cultural stop, but not somewhere we'd recommend for a beach holiday. Our Stone Town guide covers what to do there.
Match Your Style
A Simple Guide
Zanzibar by style: honeymooners to Matemwe/Pongwe; families to Nungwi/Kendwa; solo to Nungwi/Paje; first-timers north; culture lovers start in Stone Town.
A simple guide by traveller type:
- Honeymooners, usually happiest in Matemwe, Pongwe or quieter parts of Kendwa, privacy with beautiful surroundings.
- Families, often prefer Nungwi or Kendwa, the consistently swimmable beaches make family days easier.
- Solo travellers, many enjoy Nungwi or Paje for their sociable atmospheres and activities.
- First-time visitors, the north coast is often easiest, the broadest range of activities with fewer surprises around swimming.
- Kitesurfers, Paje remains one of Zanzibar's best-known kitesurfing destinations.
- Culture lovers, start with Stone Town before moving to a beach, two different experiences in one trip.
Our honeymoon, solo and family guides go deeper by traveller type.
Split Your Stay?
Often, but Not Always
Often yes: many combine Stone Town with a beach stay, or even visit two coasts on longer trips. But moving too much on short trips cuts relaxation time.
Often, yes. Many travellers enjoy combining one or two nights in Stone Town with three to five nights on the beach, and some longer holidays even combine two different coastal areas. That can work well if you genuinely want two different experiences.
For shorter trips, however, moving hotels too often can reduce your relaxation time. Sometimes one carefully chosen beach base is the better option.
How We Help + Talk
Priorities Over Star Ratings
We don't recommend a beach just because it's expensive. We ask what you want—swimming, quiet, kitesurfing, romance—and match the area to your priorities.
We don't recommend a beach simply because it's fashionable or expensive. Instead, we ask questions like: Do you want to swim all day? Do you enjoy lively restaurants? Would you rather have peace and quiet? Are you travelling with children? Are you celebrating a honeymoon? Is kitesurfing on your wish list?
Your answers matter far more than the hotel's star rating. By matching the area to your priorities, we help you enjoy Zanzibar for what it really is, not what a brochure suggests it should be.
A real example: a couple initially chose a quiet east coast hotel because they loved the photographs. During planning, they mentioned that swimming every day was one of the highlights they were looking forward to, so we recommended Kendwa instead. Afterwards, they said it was exactly the right decision, they spent hours in the ocean each day and would have been disappointed if they hadn't understood how the tides differed around the island.
