Is Zanzibar Good for Families?

Is Zanzibar Good for Families?

The Short Answer

Yes, With the Right Coast

Is Zanzibar good for kids? Yes, if you choose the right coast. Warm water, beaches and activities make it a great safari finish, but location matters.

If you're planning a Tanzania family holiday, you may wonder whether Zanzibar is a good place to bring children. The honest answer is yes, provided you choose the right part of the island. With warm Indian Ocean water, beautiful beaches, wildlife experiences and family-friendly activities, Zanzibar can be an excellent finish to a family safari.

The biggest decision isn't which hotel to book, it's which coast you choose.

Tides Matter Most

North Is Usually Easier

The tides change your beach day. On the east coast, the sea retreats far at low tide; kids face a long walk to swim. The north stays swimmable all day.

If there's one thing we encourage every family to understand before booking Zanzibar, it's this: the tides can completely change your beach day. On much of the east coast, the sea retreats a long way at low tide, so children hoping to jump straight into the water may instead find a long stretch of exposed sand before reaching swimming depth.

Some families enjoy exploring the tidal flats; others find it frustrating. If your children simply want to swim whenever they feel like it, the north coast is usually the easier choice, areas such as Nungwi and Kendwa remain much more consistently swimmable throughout the day. Our guide to understanding Zanzibar's tides explains why.

Best Areas for Families

Usually the North Coast

For most families, we recommend the north coast: reliable all-day swimming, shallow beaches, plenty of restaurants, easy activities and a relaxed vibe.

For most families, we usually recommend the north coast. It offers reliable swimming throughout the day, gently shelving beaches, plenty of restaurants and cafes, easy access to family-friendly activities, and a lively but relaxed atmosphere.

Families with older children who enjoy kitesurfing or quieter beaches may also enjoy other parts of the island, but for younger children and first-time visitors, the north is often the easiest and most practical option. Our which-beach guide compares the areas.

Activities for Kids

Plenty to Enjoy

Zanzibar has plenty for families: snorkelling, boat trips, sandbanks, sunset dhow sails, Jozani Forest monkeys and interactive spice tours.

One of Zanzibar's strengths is that there are plenty of activities suitable for families:

- Gentle snorkelling, older children often enjoy seeing colourful fish in calm, shallow water; many excursions suit beginners.

- Boat trips, short boat or glass-bottom excursions are exciting without taking the whole day, shorter is better for younger children.

- Sandbank visits, a few hours where children can paddle, play and explore, usually planned around the tides.

- Sunset dhow cruises, memorable, particularly for older children who enjoy being out on the water.

- Jozani Forest, home to the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkey, an easy walk and a nice contrast to beach days.

- Spice farm visits, interactive and surprisingly enjoyable, introducing children to tropical fruits and spices.

Water Safety

Sensible Precautions

The ocean is generally calm around Zanzibar, but sensible precautions matter: supervise children, watch tides and currents, and use life jackets on boats.

The Indian Ocean is generally calm around much of Zanzibar, but sensible precautions are always important. Parents should:

- Supervise children whenever they're in or near the water

- Pay attention to tides and currents

- Ensure children wear life jackets on boat trips when provided

- Follow guidance from local crews and guides

A little planning helps everyone enjoy the water safely.

Sun, Heat & Comfort

Plan Around the Midday Sun

The tropical sun is stronger than expected for kids. Plan beach days around the hottest hours, and prioritize water, hats, shade and high sun protection.

The tropical sun is often stronger than visitors expect, and for children especially, it's worth planning beach time around the hottest part of the day. Simple precautions include regular drinks of water, hats, lightweight clothing, shade during the middle of the day, and high-quality sun protection.

Safari Then Beach

The Beach Balances the Bush

The beach perfectly balances a family safari. After early mornings and game drives, kids get the freedom to swim while parents find time to relax.

Many parents find the beach perfectly balances the excitement of a safari. After several days of early mornings, wildlife viewing and travelling between parks, children often appreciate the freedom to swim, play and relax, and parents usually enjoy it just as much.

Instead of rushing from one activity to another, everyone has time to unwind before heading home. That's why safari followed by Zanzibar has become one of Tanzania's classic family itineraries. Our family safari guide covers the bush half.

Practical Tips

Keep It Relaxed

A few choices make a family holiday easier: interconnecting rooms, one beach base, free time between activities, short boat trips, and flagging fussy eaters.

A few simple choices can make a family beach holiday much easier. We usually recommend:

- Booking family rooms or interconnecting accommodation where available

- Choosing one beach area rather than moving hotels repeatedly

- Allowing free time between organised activities

- Keeping boat trips shorter for younger children

- Mentioning dietary preferences or fussy eaters before arrival

A relaxed itinerary almost always works better than trying to fit too much into a few days.

How We Plan It + Talk

Matched to Your Children

We help families choose the Zanzibar coast matching their kids' ages, swimming and pace. Plus, we explain the tides honestly before you book.

We don't simply recommend Zanzibar, we help families choose the part of the island that matches their children. We'll discuss children's ages, swimming ability, activity levels, family interests and pace of travel. Most importantly, we'll explain Zanzibar's tides honestly before you book.

Sometimes that means recommending the north coast instead of a quieter beach that looks beautiful in photographs but may not suit your family. We'd rather help you choose the right destination than leave you disappointed after you arrive.

A real example: a family with two young children initially chose an east coast hotel because they loved the photos. During planning, they explained their children were excited about spending every afternoon swimming, so we recommended the north coast instead. Afterwards, they said it had been one of the best decisions they made, the children spent hours in the water every day without needing to plan around the tides.
