Yes, you can get around Tanzania without flying, by road and by ferry. The honest caveat: it's slow, and the distances are far bigger than a map suggests. Tanzania is a large country, and a route that looks short can swallow most of a day.

• Arusha to the central Serengeti by road can take the better part of a day, often broken with a stop at Ngorongoro.
• Arusha to Tarangire or the crater is shorter, a couple of hours to a half-day.
• Crossing the country (for example Arusha toward Dar es Salaam) is a very long haul, easily spread over more than one day by road.

The lesson: plan fewer moves, longer stays. Stacking long road days back to back leaves you tired and short on actual safari time.

Buses are how most Tanzanians cover long distances, and the better intercity lines are genuinely comfortable. The catch is that quality and safety vary a lot between operators, so the choice of company matters more than the route.

If there's one no-fly leg that's genuinely easy, it's the Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar ferry, a short sea crossing on the fast-ferry service. It mainly makes sense if you're already in Dar; coming straight off a northern safari, flying to Zanzibar is far quicker than backtracking to the coast by road.

Book a reputable fast-ferry operator, keep your passport handy (you pass through a checkpoint), and be aware the sea can be choppy on some days if you're prone to seasickness.

Road safety deserves more attention than wildlife on an overland trip. Long-distance travel after dark is the genuine risk, unlit roads, livestock, pedestrians and other vehicles, so we plan around daytime travel wherever possible and recommend you do the same.
