Our Kilimanjaro Routes, with Prices

14 priced climbs on seven routes, shortest first within each route. Days matter more than the route name. More days on the mountain give your body more time to adjust. That is the reason for the 9 and 10-day climbs, and for the acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut on the 8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Marangu Route (day 4). If you feel unwell high up, going down is the answer: the Wilderness Medical Society's guideline calls descent "the single best treatment" for acute mountain sickness (2024 update). Ask how your guide decides when to turn a climber round before you book.

What the studies found

What the Research Says About Reaching the Summit

No current official success-rate figure is published by the park authority. The route-by-route percentages repeated online go back to figures attributed to the park from 2006, which the park has never updated or published again. Two peer-reviewed studies, each with its limits:

Marangu route, published 2009

Davies and others, Wilderness & Environmental Medicine (abstract): of 181 Marangu trekkers with complete data (312 enrolled), 61% reached the summit and 77% had acute mountain sickness on summit day. Data from July and August 2005, on four and five-day ascents; the authors say the trekkers they lost track of may make the summit figure too high.

Rongai route, published 2016

Lawrence and Reid, same journal (abstract): 175 trekkers on a six-day ascent of the Rongai route, 2012 to 2014; 88% reached Uhuru Peak. Being aged 40 or over, and being female, were associated with not reaching the summit. One company's charity groups travelling with a doctor, most of them on a preventive altitude medicine.

Neither study measured the longer 8 to 10-day climbs in our catalogue. What they support is the reasoning behind longer climbs: more days on the mountain give your body more time to adjust. We publish no summit figure of our own. Read more: how hard is Kilimanjaro.

Inside the price

Park Fees Inside Every Climb

Every climber pays the park. These are the Kilimanjaro lines of the TANAPA Tariffs 2023/2024 for a non-East African adult (16 and over). The tariff says all charges are VAT exclusive, so the last column adds 18%.

Kilimanjaro National Park fees for a non-East African adult, TANAPA Tariffs 2023/2024
FeeChargedTariffWith 18% VAT
Conservation feeper person per day$70$82.60
Hut fee (Mandara, Horombo, Kibo)per person per night$60$70.80
Camping feeper person per night$50$59.00
Rescue feeper person per climb, non-refundable$20$23.60

Worked example: the 7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route, 6 nights in tents

How the park counts conservation-fee days on a 7-day climb, gate day to gate day, is a question we are confirming, so here are both readings per person:

Counted as 7 days

  • Conservation fee, 7 days × $70$490
  • Camping fee, 6 nights × $50$300
  • Rescue fee, once$20
  • Before VAT$810
  • With 18% VAT$955.80

Counted as 6 days

  • Conservation fee, 6 days × $70$420
  • Camping fee, 6 nights × $50$300
  • Rescue fee, once$20
  • Before VAT$740
  • With 18% VAT$873.20

On Marangu the hut fee ($60 a night before VAT) replaces the camping fee. Its tour page lists park fees as included in its $2,228. The park also charges a crew fee of TShs 5,000 per trip for each Tanzanian crew member. The tariff on the park authority's site is the 2023/2024 edition, printed as valid 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024; we have not found a newer official one. The full cost of a climb, line by line: what it costs to climb Kilimanjaro.

Before you book any climb

Safety, Rescue and Insurance: What to Check

Four facts that decide whether a bad night on the mountain is a story or a bill, and what to ask any operator, including us, before you buy a policy.

The park rescue fee is ground rescue

The tariff charges every climber a rescue fee of $20 per climb, non-refundable. Three of our tour pages list it as included: 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Shira Route, 7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Shira Route and 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Umbwe Route; the park charges it on every climb, so it sits inside the park fees on the others. It pays for the park's ground rescue, not a helicopter or a hospital.

Helicopters are a separate service

Helicopter rescue on the mountain is run by Kilimanjaro SAR, a Moshi-based service since 2016 flying Airbus AS350 B3 helicopters, with Kosovo Camp at about 4,900 m as high as it can usually pick up; the helicopter operators on the mountain fly in daylight, weather permitting. Operators register climbers with the service before the climb using passport and insurance details, and the flight is paid by your insurer or by you.

The 6,000 m line

Many insurers write trekking cover with an altitude ceiling. One major insurer states 6,000 m on all its plans and names Kilimanjaro at 5,895 m as inside it (policies differ by country of residence). A policy that stops at 4,000 m or 5,000 m is no use on summit night.

AMREF is a second layer, not the first

AMREF Flying Doctors sells a 30-day Maisha Tourist Silver cover for Tanzania, Zanzibar and Kenya. It is air and ground evacuation between hospitals in East Africa, not a mountain helicopter: useful on top of a trekking policy, no substitute for one.

Oxygen

None of our climb tour pages lists bottled oxygen or pulse-oximeter checks as included. Descent is the treatment for altitude illness (Wilderness Medical Society guideline). Ask us what is on your climb before you buy insurance, and get the answer in writing.

Your checklist, before you pay for a policy

  • Altitude: the policy is valid to 6,000 m, in writing.
  • Evacuation: helicopter evacuation from the mountain and hospital treatment afterwards are both covered, with the excess stated.
  • The operator: you have asked, in writing, what oxygen, pulse-oximeter checks and rescue registration the climb has, and what you must buy yourself. Then buy to the gap.

Ask us what is on your climb or ask on WhatsApp. Sources: the TANAPA tariff; Kilimanjaro SAR as described on the pages of operators that register climbers with it; World Nomads; AMREF Flying Doctors; the Wilderness Medical Society guideline. Read 21 to 25 October 2026.

The people who carry the climb

Your Crew and Tips

The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) gives guidance on how to tip, not how much: its page sets no amount per day, and it notes that the porters' minimum wage is not enforced. Its advice is to tip each crew member directly, ideally in their own envelope. If the guide hands out the tips, the total and each person's share should be announced in front of the whole crew, and you write it down and sign it. Operators should share their tipping guidelines before the climb; if they do not, ask how many crew you will have.

So ask us for our crew list and tipping procedure before you climb. We send it with your quote. What porters carry and why it matters: should you hire porters for Kilimanjaro. Choosing who to climb with: how to choose a Kilimanjaro operator.

How Many People Climb

Kilimanjaro National Park's CEO, Angela Nyaki, reported more than 55,000 climbers between July 2024 and February 2025, against a pre-pandemic average of about 49,000 a year (The Guardian, Tanzania, 28 March 2025). Our route guides say where that shows: Machame is busy, especially at the gate and Barranco Camp, and on Marangu Horombo Hut gets crowded in peak season.

After the summit

Add a Safari

Tarangire, the nearest of the big parks, is about two hours by road from Arusha. We book the climb and the safari as two items from the same desk, with a night in Moshi or Arusha between them. Example: a 7-day Machame climb from $2,228 plus a 3-day lodge safari from $1,071 is from $3,299 per person. Itineraries for 3 to 7 days after the climb: post-Kilimanjaro safari.

Questions

Climbing Kilimanjaro: Your Questions Answered

How many days does it take to climb Kilimanjaro?

Our climbs run 6 to 10 days: 6 on Shira and Umbwe; 7 on Machame, Lemosho, Marangu and Shira; 8 on Marangu, Rongai and Northern Circuit; 9 on Machame, Lemosho, Rongai and Northern Circuit; 10 on Lemosho. More days on the mountain give your body more time to adjust. More in our days guide.

How much does it cost to climb Kilimanjaro?

With us, from $1,570 per person (6-day Umbwe, two climbers) to $3,188 (9-day Rongai), read on the tour pages on 25 October 2026. The park fees alone for a 7-day camping climb come to $873.20 to $955.80 per person with VAT. Full breakdown: what it costs to climb Kilimanjaro.

Which Kilimanjaro route is best for beginners?

Choose by days, not by name. More days on the mountain give your body more time to adjust. Our longest climbs are 9 days on Machame, Lemosho, Rongai or the Northern Circuit, and 10 on Lemosho. With a week, the 7-day Machame, Lemosho and Marangu climbs all cost $2,228. Compared: the best route to climb Kilimanjaro.

Do I need oxygen to climb Kilimanjaro?

None of our tour pages lists bottled oxygen as included. The Wilderness Medical Society calls descent the single best treatment for acute mountain sickness. Ask us in writing what is carried on your climb: oxygen, pulse-oximeter checks and rescue registration.

How hard is it to climb Kilimanjaro?

The altitude is the hard part. In a study of Marangu trekkers in 2005, published in 2009, 61% of 181 reached the summit and 77% had acute mountain sickness. A 2016 study of six-day Rongai ascents found climbers aged 40 or over, and women, less likely to summit. More: how hard is Kilimanjaro.

What is included in your Kilimanjaro climb price?

Most tour pages list park fees, meals, a guide, camping equipment, transport and taxes. The 6-day Umbwe, 6-day Shira and 7-day Shira climbs also list the park rescue fee; none lists oxygen. Each card shows its own list. Flights, insurance and tips are on no list.

Can I climb Kilimanjaro alone?

Not without a guide: every climber must have a licensed guide (our guide on that). Every climb here is private, so it can run for one climber. Only the 9-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route prints a solo price, $3,925; for the others, ask us.

Can I do a safari after Kilimanjaro?

Yes. Book the climb and the safari as two items: a 7-day Machame from $2,228 plus a 3-day lodge safari from $1,071 is from $3,299 per person. Itineraries: post-Kilimanjaro safari.

How many people climb Kilimanjaro each year?

Kilimanjaro National Park's CEO, Angela Nyaki, reported more than 55,000 climbers between July 2024 and February 2025, against a pre-pandemic average of about 49,000 a year (The Guardian, Tanzania, 28 March 2025).
