Where you go
Most trips start in Arusha and visit the four northern parks. The southern parks suit a second trip or a longer stay. Each card links to our park guide.
The park most people picture. The migration is in Tanzania about 8 months of the year. Plan two full game-drive days at the very least.
Best months: June to October, January and February
Big animals in one flat bowl, including resident black rhino. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Going down early means fewer vehicles.
Best months: All year
Baobab trees, the Tarangire River and the largest elephant population in Tanzania. The herds gather at the river from July to October.
Best months: July to October
The smallest park on the northern circuit and a good first day. It has tree-climbing lions, a forest fed by groundwater and flamingos when the lake holds water.
Best months: July to October, January and February
A southern park. Our Nyerere tours start in Dar es Salaam, or fly in from Zanzibar. The 3-day Dar es Salaam tour starts at $590 per person.

When to go
Most months work. You are choosing between weather, crowds and price.
The dry season. Views are clear, and the herds are in the north of the Serengeti. River crossings happen about July to October. Lodges fill early, so book ahead.
Calving season in Ndutu, in the south of the Serengeti. Wildebeest calves are born and predators are busy. A strong second choice after the crossings.
The green season. It is quiet and green. Expect afternoon rain and some hard roads in the Serengeti.
Good weather with fewer visitors, so many travelers find it the best value.

For US travelers
A Tanzania safari vacation from the US needs some lead time. Here is what to sort out, and when.
There are no nonstop flights from the US to Tanzania. You fly with one stop. For the northern parks, fly into Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), about an hour from Arusha. Book the whole trip on one ticket. According to our visa guide, US passport holders need the $100 multiple-entry visa. Apply on the official portal about 3 to 4 weeks before you fly. Read Tanzania visa for US citizens.

On our live tour list, a Tanzania safari costs from $174 per person per day at budget level, $274 at mid-range and $391 at luxury. That is $869 to $1,953 for a 5-day trip and $1,815 to $2,750 for a 7-day trip, from the cheapest level to the most expensive. Most first-time visitors choose 5 to 7 days. Seven days is the length we plan around for the northern parks. It gives you two full days in the Serengeti, a morning in Ngorongoro Crater and a day each in Tarangire and Lake Manyara. With 5 days you rush the Serengeti or drop a park. June to October is the dry season and the most popular time. The herds are in the north of the Serengeti, and river crossings happen about July to October. January and February are calving season in the south of the Serengeti. April and May are green and quiet, with afternoon rain. Most months work, so you are choosing between weather, crowds and price. Our Arusha team says yes, with normal travel care. The northern parks run as managed areas. Rangers patrol them, you stay in the vehicle with your driver-guide on game drives, and there is no driving at night in the parks. In towns, petty theft is the main risk. Roads are the most common real risk, which is why we use senior driver-guides. It is worth it if you want to see big wildlife in the wild. The price is high per day because park fees, the vehicle and the guide are charged every day, and they add up.
