Four things the tour pages get wrong on price

The 9-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Northern Circuit reads $2,189, less than the 8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Northern Circuit at $2,640. Ask us before you choose on price.

The 6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Umbwe Route shows a price for two climbers only ($1,570); for other group sizes, ask us.

The 7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Shira Route holds a data-entry slip: one autumn rate reads $229 against $2,297 in every other season. We quote $2,297.

Only the 9-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route shows a solo price, $3,925. Every climb can run for one climber; ask us for the others.

Inside the price

How Much of the Price Is Park Fees

Every climber pays the park. These are the Kilimanjaro lines of the TANAPA Tariffs 2023/2024 for a non-East African adult (16 and over). The tariff says every charge is VAT exclusive, so the last column adds 18%.

Kilimanjaro National Park fees for a non-East African adult, TANAPA Tariffs 2023/2024
FeeChargedTariffWith 18% VAT
Conservation feeper person per day$70$82.60
Hut fee (Mandara, Horombo and Kibo huts)per person per night$60$70.80
Camping feeper person per night$50$59.00
Rescue feeper person per climb, non-refundable$20$23.60
Kilimanjaro National Park signboard at Shira 2 Camp with tents behind it
Every night in a tent is a camping fee; every day in the park is a conservation fee.

Every operator pays the same park fees. A price far below them is cutting something else.

How we count each climb

From each climb's own day-by-day on its tour page: the day it enters the park, the day it reaches the exit gate, and the nights in between, hut or tent. The tariff charges the conservation fee "per person per day" and does not say whether the gate-in and gate-out days both count. We are confirming that with the park, so every total below is shown both ways. The rescue fee is charged once per climb.

Night 5, after the summit, is not named on the tour page; Marangu has huts only, so it is counted at the hut rate (at the camping rate the total is $11.80 less).

  • 7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Marangu Route: Night 5, after the summit, is not named on the tour page; Marangu has huts only, so it is counted at the hut rate (at the camping rate the total is $11.80 less).
  • 8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Marangu Route: Its day 1 and day 2 titles both end at Mandara Hut and night 1 is Karibu Heritage House, so the count starts on day 2.
  • 8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Northern Circuit and 9-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Northern Circuit: Moir Hut is a camp on this route; the tariff charges the hut fee only at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo.
  • 8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Rongai Route: Its inclusion list does not show park fees; every climber pays them, so ask us to confirm they are in the price.
  • 9-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route: Its night 8 is listed as camping, but day 8 ends at Mweka Gate, so it is not counted.
  • 10-Day Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Climbing Tour: Its tour page says 10 days but shows 8 day rows; this is counted from those rows, and we confirm the full plan with your quote.

The park also charges a crew fee of TShs 5,000 per trip for each Tanzanian crew member; the operator pays it, so it is not in the per-person sums. The tariff on the park authority's site is the 2023/2024 edition, printed as valid 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024; a third-party copy titled 2023/2026 prints the same Kilimanjaro fees, and we have not found a newer official one. Up or down

What Makes the Price Go Up or Down

Days
Per person for two: 6 days $1,570 to $1,870; 7 days $2,228 to $2,297; 8 days $2,638 to $2,785; 9 days $2,189 to $3,188; 10 days $2,758. Days on a tour page are not all days in the park: the 9-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route spends 7 of its 9 days in the park, the 9-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Lemosho Route spends 7 of its 9 days in the park and the 10-Day Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Climbing Tour spends 6 of its 10 days in the park, the rest in a hotel or on the road. The park fees follow the days in the park, not the tour days.
Route
Huts or tents. A hut night on Marangu costs $70.80 with VAT against $59.00 for a tent night, yet the 7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Marangu Route costs the same $2,228 as the 7-day Machame and Lemosho with lower park fees: 5 days in the park against 7.
Group size
On most climbs each person pays less as the group grows: the 7-day Machame is $2,228 each for two, $2,062 for three to four and $1,950 for five to six. The 6-day Shira, 7-day Shira, 8-day Northern Circuit and 9-day Northern Circuit climbs keep one price for two to six. The park fees do not fall with group size.
Private or shared
Every climb we sell is private: your group, your guide, your own dates. None of them is a shared departure, so the per-person price falls only with the size of your own group.
Hotels before and after
Every tour page marks hotel nights before and after the climb as extra cost. 7 climbs already include a night at Karibu Heritage House at the start, the end or both (7-day Marangu, 8-day Marangu, 8-day Rongai, 9-day Lemosho, 9-day Machame, 9-day Rongai and 10-day Lemosho); the other 7 (6-day Umbwe, 6-day Shira, 7-day Shira, 7-day Lemosho, 7-day Machame, 8-day Northern Circuit and 9-day Northern Circuit) start and end on the trail, so budget your own nights in Moshi or Arusha.
Season
None. Every climb carries the same price in all four seasonal rate tables on its tour page, apart from the slip on the 7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Shira Route. The park tariff has no high or low season for Kilimanjaro either; its seasonal rates cover Serengeti, Nyerere, Lake Manyara, Tarangire and Arusha only.

Every route camp by camp, with the same prices: Climb Kilimanjaro.

Cheap Kilimanjaro Climbs: What to Check

A low price is only good news if the same things are inside it. Five checks, for any quote, ours included.

  1. Park fees inside the price

On a 7-day camping climb they come to $873.20 or $955.80 per person with VAT. Every operator pays the same park fees. A price far below them is cutting something else.

  2. The list, not the headline

Line the inclusion lists up side by side, as our table above does for our own climbs, and ask about every gap.

  3. The crew and how they are paid

Ask for the crew list. The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project asks climbers to tip each crew member directly, or to have the total and each share announced in front of the whole crew, written down and signed.

  4. Safety equipment

Ask what safety equipment is on the climb: oxygen, a pulse oximeter, rescue registration, and who pays for an evacuation. Get the answer in writing before you buy insurance.

  5. The nights off the mountain

A climb that starts on the trail on day 1 leaves your hotel nights to you. Ask which nights are in the price.

More on choosing who to climb with: how to choose a Kilimanjaro operator. Why a licensed guide is not optional: do you need a guide for Kilimanjaro.

After the summit

Climb and Safari Together

We price the climb and the safari as two items from the same desk, with a night in Moshi or Arusha between them: the 7-day Machame climb from $2,228 plus the 3-Day Tarangire, Crater & Manyara Safari, a lodge safari, from $1,071 is from $3,299 per person for two. Itineraries for 3 to 7 days after the climb: post-Kilimanjaro safari. What a safari on its own costs: Tanzania safari cost.

Questions

Kilimanjaro Climb Cost: Your Questions Answered

How much does it cost to climb Kilimanjaro?

With us, from $1,570 per person (6-day Umbwe, two climbers) to $3,188 (9-day Rongai), as our tour pages read on 25 October 2026. A 7-day Machame, Lemosho or Marangu climb is $2,228 each for two. Add flights, visa, insurance, tips, gear and any hotel nights before or after.

How much are Kilimanjaro park fees?

For a non-East African adult: $70 conservation fee per day, $50 camping or $60 hut fee per night, and $20 rescue fee per climb, plus 18% VAT. On our 7-day Machame climb that is $873.20 or $955.80 per person, as the park counts 6 or 7 days.

Why are Kilimanjaro climbs so expensive?

A large, fixed part is the park fees: on our 7-day Machame climb they are 39.2% to 42.9% of the $2,228 price for two. The rest covers what the tour page lists: a guide, meals, camping equipment, transport and airport transfers.

Is a cheaper Kilimanjaro climb worth it?

Every operator pays the same park fees. A price far below them is cutting something else. Compare what each price lists, not the headline, ask for the crew list and how porters are paid, and ask what safety equipment is on the climb: oxygen, a pulse oximeter, rescue registration.

How much should I tip on Kilimanjaro?

We set no amount here. KPAP, the porters' welfare project, publishes none either: it asks you to tip each crew member directly, or to have the total and each share announced in front of the whole crew. Ask us for the crew list and our tipping procedure before you climb.

Is it cheaper to climb Kilimanjaro in a group?

Every climb we sell is private: you climb with your own group only. On most, the price per person falls as the group grows: the 7-day Machame is $2,228 each for two, $2,062 for three to four and $1,950 for five to six. 4 climbs keep one price for two to six.

What is not included in the price?

Flights, visa, travel insurance, tips and personal gear are on no tour page list. Every tour page marks hotel nights before and after the climb as extra cost. Some lists also leave out porterage, meals or transport: our table shows each climb's gaps.

Does the price change by season?

No. Each climb carries the same price in every season on its tour page (one data-entry slip on the 7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb via Shira Route aside), and the park tariff has no high or low season for Kilimanjaro: its seasonal rates cover Serengeti, Nyerere, Lake Manyara, Tarangire and Arusha only.
