Two weeks is a lovely length for Tanzania, enough for a proper safari and a real beach finish without rushing. A sensible shape: roughly a week on a northern-circuit safari, four to five nights in Zanzibar, and a buffer day at each end for arrival and the long flight home.

If you want to plan it yourself, you absolutely can, and this page gives you a workable structure plus the mistakes to dodge. It also flags, honestly, the few points where a local operator genuinely saves you money or grief, so you can decide what to hand over and what to keep.

A balanced two weeks tends to flow like this:

• Day 1: Arrive Arusha, rest and brief
• Days 2-7: Northern-circuit safari, Tarangire, central Serengeti (give it three nights), then Ngorongoro
• Day 8: Fly to Zanzibar
• Days 8-12: Zanzibar, beach plus a Stone Town night and a day or two of activities
• Day 13: Buffer / final beach day
• Day 14: Fly home

The principle behind it: fewer parks, longer stays. Three nights in the Serengeti beats hopping a new park every day. The buffer days absorb a delayed flight or a slow road without wrecking the plan.

• Too many parks — the classic error. Cramming five or six parks into the safari week means more time driving than watching wildlife.
• Underestimating transfers — distances look short on a map and eat half a day on real roads. Plan around that.
• The wrong season — booking peak prices without the peak benefit, or green season without knowing the trade-offs. Match the month to your priorities.
• No buffer — a single delayed bush flight can topple a tight back-to-back plan. Leave slack.
• Booking lodges that don't line up — great camps that are nowhere near each other, or in the wrong part of the Serengeti for the season.

To be straight with you, some parts are harder to self-plan than they look:

• Lodge availability across several parks — good camps have few rooms and fill months ahead; lining up dates that connect is fiddly.
• Bush-flight and transfer timing — getting the safari-to-Zanzibar legs to slot together without dead days or missed connections.
• Seasonal positioning — knowing which part of the Serengeti the wildlife is in for your dates, so you're not staying an hour from the action.

None of this means you can't DIY. It means these are the bits where a local operator earns their keep, and where booking direct often costs the same or less than piecing it together yourself (see the do-you-need-a-travel-agent guide).
