People often picture a honeymoon safari as simply two people sharing a vehicle. In reality that's a small part of it.

The moments couples remember aren't always the lion sightings. They're the quiet moments between them:

- A sundowner over the Serengeti after an incredible day

- Falling asleep to the sounds of the bush from a tented camp

- Dinner under the stars, no city lights for miles

- Waking before sunrise for coffee over the savannah

- Sitting quietly as a herd of elephants walks past camp

A safari gives you something many holidays don't: uninterrupted time together. No shopping centres, no crowds, no packed schedule. It slows you down, and that's what most honeymoon couples value most.

Many lodges and tented camps recognise honeymooners and may offer small complimentary touches:

- Private candlelit dinners

- Romantic room decorations

- Honeymoon turndown service

- Sparkling wine

- A complimentary cake

- Room upgrades, subject to availability

- Discounted extra nights at selected properties

The important word is may. These vary lodge to lodge and shouldn't be assumed. When we plan with you, we ask whether you're celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or special occasion, so we can tell the lodges in advance. We can't guarantee extras, but many properties enjoy helping couples mark a milestone.

For almost every honeymoon couple, the answer is yes. If there's one area worth investing in, it's having your own private vehicle.

The reason is simple: the safari moves at your pace.

- Want to spend an hour with a leopard? You can.

- Prefer to stop for coffee overlooking the plains? You can.

- Want privacy between sightings? That's part of it too.

A shared safari is still enjoyable, but a honeymoon is one of the few trips where the flexibility of a private guide genuinely changes the experience. Our private vs group guide explains the trade-offs in full.

For romance, it's usually less about which park and more about the style of camp. Small luxury tented camps win because they mean fewer guests, a quieter atmosphere, more personalised service, intimate dining and exceptional locations.

By park:

- Serengeti, perfect for couples wanting iconic wildlife alongside beautiful camps.

- Ngorongoro, wonderful for a night or two, especially lodges with crater views.

- Tarangire, excellent if you enjoy quieter safaris and the baobab landscapes.

As a rule, for honeymooners we'd recommend boutique camps with fewer than 20 rooms over very large lodges. They simply feel more private.

This is our most requested honeymoon itinerary, for good reason. The safari gives you the excitement; Zanzibar gives you time to relax afterwards.

The order matters. We almost always recommend safari first, beach second. After several early-morning game drives, arriving in Zanzibar feels like a reward. Done the other way around, couples often struggle to leave the beach and start waking early again. Our Zanzibar guides cover the islands in detail.

There's no single perfect month, it depends on the honeymoon you want.

- July to October: best for a classic safari, dry weather and outstanding wildlife. Trade-off: higher prices and more visitors.

- January to February: one of our favourite honeymoon periods, green scenery, calving season, fewer crowds and warm Zanzibar weather. Many couples find it more romantic than peak season.

- April to May: possible for couples prioritising value who don't mind occasional rain.

Our favourite balance:

- Safari: 5 to 7 nights, enough for several parks without rushing.

- Zanzibar: 4 to 5 nights, enough to genuinely relax before flying home.

That's roughly 9 to 12 nights total, the sweet spot for most honeymoon couples.

If you're planning a proposal, tell us early. Some ideas need coordination with lodges or guides and are far easier to arrange before you arrive. What we avoid is anything that disturbs wildlife or other guests just for a celebration.

Our honeymoon itineraries focus on three things.

- Intimate over simply luxurious. We recommend accommodation that feels personal.

- A relaxed pace. Rather than changing lodges every night, we give you time to enjoy each place.

- A quiet word ahead. We tell the lodges you're celebrating, so they can prepare any touches they normally offer, a decorated room, a private dinner, or simply exceptional service. It's never guaranteed, but it often makes the trip feel more personal.

A real example: one honeymoon couple originally planned six nights of safari with just one night in Zanzibar before flying home. During planning, we suggested trimming the safari by a night and adding three on the beach instead. They later said that while the wildlife exceeded every expectation, those final days in Zanzibar gave them time to relax, reflect on the safari, and enjoy the start of married life without feeling rushed. The balance, they said, made it feel like a true honeymoon rather than just a holiday.
