What to Pack for Zanzibar

What to Pack for Zanzibar

The Short Answer

Pack Light, Plus One Layer

Packing for Zanzibar is simple: light beach clothes and sun protection. The one thing people forget? A modest layer for Stone Town and local villages.

Packing for Zanzibar is refreshingly simple. Unlike a safari, where you'll need layers for cool mornings and dusty game drives, Zanzibar is all about warm weather, beaches and relaxed island life.

The one thing many visitors forget? Something modest to wear away from the beach. Pack light, dress comfortably, and bring one extra layer for exploring Stone Town and local villages.

Beach Essentials

Lightweight and Quick-Drying

Pack light beach clothing: swimwear, sandals, a light cover-up, a sun hat and sunglasses. Quick-drying clothing is especially useful for your Zanzibar trip.

Most of your suitcase will be filled with lightweight beach clothing. We recommend packing:

- Swimwear (at least two sets)

- Lightweight beach clothes

- Flip-flops or sandals

- A light beach cover-up

- A sun hat or cap

- Sunglasses

Quick-drying clothing is especially useful if you're moving between the beach, pool and boat trips throughout the day.

Clothing for Town

The Most-Forgotten Item

The item travellers most wish they'd packed: modest clothes for off the beach. A shirt covering shoulders and knee-length shorts or trousers is all you need.

This is the item many travellers wish they'd packed. While swimwear is perfectly acceptable on the beach or at your resort, it's respectful to dress more modestly when visiting Stone Town, local villages, markets, and restaurants away from the beach.

A lightweight shirt, blouse or T-shirt that covers your shoulders, together with shorts below the knee, a skirt or lightweight trousers, is usually all you need. It keeps you comfortable in the tropical heat while showing respect for Zanzibar's predominantly Muslim culture. Our Zanzibar beach rules and etiquette guide explains this in more detail.

Sun Protection

Stronger Than You Expect

The tropical sun is stronger than expected. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and rash vests for snorkelling.

The tropical sun in Zanzibar is stronger than many visitors expect. We recommend bringing high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm with sun protection, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat or cap, and after-sun lotion.

Families and snorkellers may also appreciate a lightweight rash vest for extra protection during longer periods in the water.

Footwear

Less Than You Think

You don't need many shoes: flip-flops or sandals for the beach, comfortable shoes for Stone Town, and reef shoes for rocky shorelines at low tide.

You don't need lots of shoes. For most travellers, these are enough:

- Flip-flops or sandals for the beach

- Comfortable walking shoes or trainers for Stone Town

- Reef or water shoes if you plan to explore rocky shorelines or walk across tidal flats

Water shoes are particularly useful on some beaches during low tide, where you'll encounter coral fragments, rocks or seagrass.

Beach Activity Extras

Rent or Bring

Depending on activities: pack a dry bag, waterproof phone pouch, beach bag, travel towel, and book. Snorkel gear is widely available to rent.

Depending on how active you plan to be, these items can make your holiday more enjoyable: a dry bag for boat trips, a waterproof phone pouch, a reusable beach bag, a lightweight travel towel if preferred, and a good book or e-reader.

If you enjoy snorkelling, you can certainly bring your own mask and snorkel. However, equipment is also widely available to rent on organised excursions, so many travellers prefer to save luggage space.

Island Essentials

The Everyday Items

Pack these everyday items: a reusable water bottle, power bank, insect repellent, personal medications, a universal travel adapter and charging cables.

A few everyday items are worth including:

- A reusable water bottle

- A power bank for long beach days and excursions

- Insect repellent

- Personal medications

- A universal travel adapter suitable for Tanzania

- Charging cables for cameras and phones

Most hotels provide the basics, but having your own essentials makes travelling much easier.

Combining With Safari

One Case for Both

Most visitors arrive after a safari, so pack one case for both. Keep beach gear light and compact so it adds little space alongside your safari kit.

Most visitors don't come to Zanzibar on its own, they arrive after a Tanzania safari. The easiest approach is to pack one suitcase that works for both parts of the trip. Keep your beach clothing lightweight, quick-drying and compact, so it takes up very little extra space alongside your safari clothing.

Rather than packing two separate holidays, think of Zanzibar as adding a few light beach items to your safari luggage. For the full safari checklist, see our Tanzania safari packing list.

How We Help + Talk

Light, Comfortable, Prepared

We give practical packing advice for your itinerary. If combining safari and Zanzibar, we help you pack for both and remind you about that town layer.

Before your trip, we'll provide practical packing advice based on your itinerary. If you're combining safari and Zanzibar, we'll help you pack for both without bringing unnecessary luggage, and we'll remind you about the one thing many people overlook: a lightweight outfit suitable for Stone Town and local villages.

Our goal is simple: travel comfortably, travel lightly, and avoid discovering you've forgotten something important after you arrive.

A real example: a couple travelling after a safari packed plenty of beachwear but almost forgot clothing suitable for exploring Stone Town. Fortunately, they added lightweight linen shirts before leaving home, and later said they were glad they did, feeling much more comfortable visiting markets, cafes and historic sites while respecting local customs. They also packed reef shoes, which proved surprisingly useful exploring the shoreline at low tide.
